Do you enjoy making three-dimensional objects that people want to own, wear or use? Are you willing to take risks? Are you excited about learning technical and conceptual skills that are both valuable and practical? As a Craft + Material Studies major, you'll express yourself through every step of the creative process, from inception of an idea to design, coalescence and completion.

You have a lot to choose from here – we're one of the few top art schools or universities to offer all five Craft media: Ceramics, Fibers + Textile Studies, Glass, Jewelry/Metals and Wood/Furniture. You'll be part of a tight-knit community that enjoys a generous amount of studio access outside of class time. In fact, junior and senior Craft majors receive individual studio spaces. You'll work with both ancient and modern tools: from weaving looms, ceramic kilns, glassblowing furnaces and hammers, to 3-D printers and laser cutters. And you'll have access to all the culture and resources the vibrant city of Philadelphia has to offer: museums and galleries, street fairs, internships, part-time employment and more.

You'll have many opportunities to exhibit your work, both at UArts – the annual wearable art show put on by the Experimental Costume Design and Performance program, the Craft Senior Thesis Show – and at major exhibitions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Philadelphia Furniture Show. Students also participate in "Art Unleashed," the University's annual exhibition and sale of artwork that raises funds for scholarships. Or perhaps you'll be like one group of students who created a pop-up jewelry show in a temporary garden created on campus by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society.
