College of Art, Media & Design Graduate Portfolio Requirements

An interview, either in person, by telephone or Skype, is required with the director of the program to which you are applying. The application and all supporting documents must be submitted to the Office of Admission prior to the interview. MFA Book Arts/Printmaking

Applicants should submit a portfolio of 20-30 digital images. These should represent the applicant’s full range of studio experience, preferably including printmaking and book arts. All digital images, time-based media and writing samples should be submitted  for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com  Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. The applicant’s one to two-page statement of professional intent should include a description of his or her interests and identity as an artist.

Applicants are also encouraged to submit selected original work. Original work should be dropped off at the time of the interview, or mailed directly to the director of the program at:

Museum Studies

Master of Arts in Museum Communication

Applicants should submit an academic writing sample that demonstrates clarity of expression, creative thought, and if appropriate, organized research.  In addition, they should submit examples of work that relate to their professional interests including, but not limited to, press releases, brochures, grant applications, exhibition documents or programming plans.  All digital images, time-based media and writing samples should be submitted  for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com.  Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. Master of Arts in Museum Education

Applicants should submit two examples of academic and professional writing.  Examples might include papers written at the college or university level; educational materials written for museums; lesson plans written for museums or schools; or any material written as an intern, staff, or volunteer of a museum or cultural institution. MFA Museum Exhibition Planning & Design

Applicants are requested to submit a, well-organized, digital portfolio of their work indicating their professional experience in the areas of art or design.  If the applicant does not have a design or fine art background, other related experience will suffice, such as gallery installations, renovations, video/film, theater, etc. In lieu of a visual portfolio, or as a supplement to the portfolio, applicants may also submit professional or scholarly writing samples.  The can include exhibition catalogs, label text, marketing materials, teaching plans, educational programs, press release, grant proposals, or thesis papers.  All digital images, time-based media and writing samples should be submitted  for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com.  Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. Master of Arts in Art Education  

Applicants should submit  a statement of intent and samples of academic or professional writing that demonstrate the following: focus, clarity of thought, and adherence to the conventions of standard academic English. Examples might include papers written at the college or university level; material written for business or professional organizations; grant applications. Applicants who are artists may submit images of their work.   All digital images, time-based media and writing samples should be submitted  for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com.  Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. Master of Arts (MAT) in Teaching in Visual Arts

Applicants should submit a statement of intent and a portfolio of 12-16 images which represent the breadth of their studio experience (diverse media).  Applicants should submit samples of academic or professional writing that demonstrate the following: focus, clarity of thought, and adherence to the conventions of standard academic English. Examples might include an artist statement or papers written at the college or university level; material written for business or professional organizations; grant applications.  All digital images, time-based media and writing samples should be submitted  for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com.  Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. MFA Low Residence Program in Studio Art
A portfolio exhibiting a level of mastery is the primary prerequisite for the MFA. Applicants should submit images that represent the recent direction of the work as well as the full range of experience in one or more of the disciplines to which application is being made. Applicants should submit 18-20 digital images or time-based media for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com. Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. Applicants should note the low residency programs are year-round and require three annual eight week, on-campus summer residences as well as off-campus independent study during the Fall and Spring semesters. These programs extend over two and a half years culminating in a thesis exhibition following completion of the third Fall semester. Accepted MFA students must begin their studies in the Summer Semester.

Master of Industrial Design

Applicants to MID should submit the following:

  • A  resume or CV covering educational, work and other experiences that are relevant to the personal and professional development of the applicant.
  • A statement of intent outlining the reasons and motivations for applying to MID
  • A portfolio of 20 pieces that showcases self-generated projects, professional assignments or projects developed in a previous program (i.e. research, drawings, models, scenarios, writing and storytelling samples, photographs, videos, design for websites, graphic design etc.). Applicants should digital images or time-based media for review online via  http://uartsgrad.slideroom.com. Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Crafts

Admission is by portfolio and interview. Applicants should submit a portfolio of 20 pieces  The portfolio should consist of images that represent the applicant’s full range of studio experience. Images must be clearly identified and must be accompanied by an inventory list giving title (or other identification), size, medium, and date of completion.
