Division of Liberal Arts Programs : Portfolio Requirements

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
The BFA in Creative Writing, offered through the Division of Liberal Arts, provides students an unmatched opportunity to focus on the craft of writing in an inspiring creative environment. The skills students will develop in the Creative Writing program will help prepare students for graduate study; a career as a professional writer in such genres as prose fiction and poetry; playwriting and screenwriting, and comics, graphic novels and video games; or a range of creative fields including editing, publishing, criticism, advertising and public relations. 

Applicants who seek direct entry admission to Creative Writing are required to submit a portfolio of original written work. The portfolio should total 10-15 pages and must include at least two different pieces of writing. Writings may include poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction, and excerpts from short stories or novels. Applicants submitting poetry must also submit examples of prose.

Bachelor of Arts in Film & Media Studies
Applicants who seek direct entry admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Film & Media Studies program are required to submit a portfolio of original work. Choose at least ONE of the following:

  • Filmic work (film, animation, video, documentary, experimental, narrative). This work should have a definitive beginning, middle and end.
  • A traditional portfolio of at least 10 works in media such as drawing, painting, design, illustration, sculpture or photography. Work should exhibit your creative ideas and themes.
  • Applicants should submit one piece of fictional prose, totaling 5-7 pages that demonstrates their interest/talent/passion in the medium. Applicants should focus on narrative structure, character development, plot and the use of setting in the piece. No poetry, plays or screenplays will be accepted. Please submit work as prose.
