Sabrina Small: Messengers of Memories
Nov 2—Nov 30 2012
Levitt Foyer Gallery
International Student Programs at the University of the Arts is thrilled to welcome artist Sabrina Small back to her native Philadelphia with "Messengers of Memories."
Small established herself as an independent artist during her six years living abroad in Berlin, Germany, where her work became deeply influenced by her intense relationship to this complex and artistically thriving city. Small's visceral connection with the places in which she lives and works followed her from Berlin to Sarasota, Fla., and now back to Philadelphia. With "Messengers of Memories," Small retraces this exquisite journey through her drawings, paintings and stitchings by breathing life into surrealistic figures, infusing them with a poignancy that is rare and revelatory. “Messengers of Memories” explores the energy and unique vision Small acquired while living abroad and draws us into the complex ways in which memories of place and relationships get tangled within all of our identities.
Sabrina Small earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Berlin, Budapest, Hamburg, London, Los Angeles, Mallorca, Nanjing, San Francisco, Seattle, Stuttgart and South Florida. After working for six years in Berlin, followed by three years in Sarasota, Fla., Small relocated to her home town of Philadelphia in the summer of 2012.
