MA in Museum Communication
Communication, messaging and story strategies are vital to the prosperity of museums big and small. If you’re looking for a career in which you get to tell, write, show, share and represent the important and exciting work that museums do and the impact they have in their communities, then an MA in Museum Communication from the University of Arts will get you where you want to go.
This is the only master’s program in the country expressly centered on providing students the knowledge and professional skills they need to connect the missions of museums and cultural organizations with the audiences, community members, donors, media representatives and policy-makers they seek to reach. You’ll study research and information literacy, communications planning, strategy development, content development, program design, digital design, fundraising, project management and more. Classroom learning is balanced with immersive hands-on learning experiences, internships and apprenticeships with many of the Philadelphia region’s more than 1,200 museums and cultural institutions.
Our students have done program planning and installation for the National Constitution Center’s “From Ashbury to the Promised Land: the Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen” exhibition, coordinated the Academy of Natural Science’s and Geekadelphia’s “Philadelphia Geek Awards,” and managed press and media activity for the Michener Art Museum’s “From Philadelphia to Monaco, Grace Kelly: Beyond the Icon” exhibition. Recent projects have explored crowdfunding as a millennial donor cultivation and engagement tool for museums, the benefits and drawbacks of social couponing and discounting for museums, and professionalizing and training museum volunteers. And our students have studied the need and feasibility of programs for post-traumatic stress syndrome sufferers in museums and special collections management guidelines for site-specific artwork.
