School of Music Grad Wins $15K Arts Award

The 2011 F. Lammot Belin Arts Scholarship has been awarded to Joseph T. Michaels BM '03 (Instrumental Performance) for his "exceptional talent as a bass musician. The $15,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving artist.

Since 2002, Michaels has been working as a professional musician based out of Northeastern Pennsylvania. He has performed with Grammy-nominated artists such as Dave Liebman and Kurt Elling, as well as artists including Tim Warfield, Herb Robertson, Phil Haynes, Ari Hoenig and Ron Thomas, among many others.

He continues to perform extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and appears on three releases from guitarist Andrew Cheshire, as well as on a release from Christian Latin Musicians Guiderman Y Claudia.

In addition to being a full-time musician, Michaels currently teaches bass, theory/ear training and jazz studies to students young and old at his home studio in Forty Fort, Pa.
