Poster by Book Arts/Printmaking Grad Wins 'Obama for America' Contest
Alumna/staff member Amanda Benton MFA '09 to receive a print of her poster signed by President Obama
December 29, 2011
Print Services staff member and alumna Amanda Benton MFA '09 (Book Arts / Printmaking) has been named one of the top three winners in President Barack Obama's Art Works poster competition in support of the American Jobs Act. Held by the "Obama for America" campaign, her winning poster (left) made the short list from a nation-wide call for submissions that was whittled down to 12.
As one of the top three winners chosen by public voting, Benton will receive a framed print of her poster signed by President Obama. A limited edition will also be sold in the campaign store with proceeds benefiting the campaign.
"I don't know what other ways they're going to use the poster, but getting a framed and signed copy of it is awesome," she told Philadelphia Weekly's blog, PhillyNow.
In addition to her recognition by the Obama Campaign, she's also a recent recipient of a 2011 Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant. The $2,500 grant will be used to create three mall displays at the Gallery at Market East in Center City Philadelphia. The pieces will reference the way women are portrayed in the media and describe the "absurdity of a culture that we allow and ignore."
