Philadelphia's Creative-Sector Firms to Get Business, Entrepreneurship Help

UArts' Corzo Center for the Creative Economy expanding support thanks to Knight Foundation Grant

April 23, 2012

Philadelphia's emerging creative-sector businesses will receive business and entrepreneurship assistance not normally available to the artistic community, thanks to a $120,000 grant to the University of the Arts' Corzo Center for the Creative Economy from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge is a $9 million initiative funding innovative projects that engage and enrich Philadelphia's communities.

To promote economic stability for the Philadelphia cultural community, the Corzo Center will offer support to emerging creative businesses through pre-seed funding, mentorship programs and workshops. The Center will expand its current programming to accommodate the rapidly growing number of creative businesses in Philadelphia, providing classes and other assistance to help new companies develop business plans, and offering free expert advice on strategies, marketing, legal issues and business critiques.

"Creative businesses – arts-, culture- and design-focused – are a major driver of the economy of greater Philadelphia," said Sean T. Buffington, president of the University of the Arts. "In these challenging times, it's very exciting to be able to help new artistic and cultural businesses emerge, expand and contribute to the region, and thanks to this Knight Foundation Grant, we will be able to extend our support even further."

The University's Corzo Center has established a number of partnerships and collaborations, and co-sponsors a variety of events and programs with groups throughout the region. The Knight Foundation Grant will allow the Center to expand opportunities for members of the University of the Arts community to work directly with entrepreneurs, as well as to assist them in taking advantage of other available programs.
