Her promotional posters chosen as top winner from among work by the entire graduating class of Illustration majors
April 5, 2013
Illustration senior Grace O'Neill took the top prize in the 2013 William H. Ely Excellence in Illustration Awards for her promotional posters for the Academy of Natural Sciences (above).
Winners of this annual juried competition are chosen from among submissions by the entire class of graduating Illustration majors, whose original artwork is displayed in the Ely Senior Illustration Thesis Exhibition.
Second place honors went to children's book drawings by Rita Carroll (below), while Greg Wright's zodiac posters took third place (bottom).
Honorable mentions were awarded to David Curtis (classic mystery book covers), Michael Bednar (editorial) and Heather Vaughan (digital graphic novel).
Endowed by its namesake in 1940, the William H. Ely Senior Illustration Thesis Exhibition features art that spans virtually every area of the illustration field, including book and other publishing venues, advertising, entertainment design, comic books, video games, interactive work, store display, and product, game and package design.
Each thesis project is a thoroughly researched and highly developed series of a related body of work based on the student's chosen theme and market. A unique feature of the exhibition is that all of the illustration presented is shown in the context for which it was designed.
