ThisWeek@UArts has begun its bi-weekly summer schedule; the next issue will be published on June 2. The regular weekly schedule will resume at the beginning of the fall semester. To submit your news and events for inclusion, please email firstname.lastname@example.org no later than Thursday at noon for the following week's issue.
Summer Building Hours
In an effort to accommodate summer activities and operate efficiently, scheduled building hours have been set from May 16 to August 24. All buildings will be locked at the closing hour. Alvin Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle Delivers Keynote Address at 136th Commencement
Robert L. Battle, artistic director of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, delivered the keynote address at the University’s 136th Commencement ceremony held May 15 at the Academy of Music. The award-winning dancer and choreographer also received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from UArts President Sean T. Buffington, who presided over the celebration. Other honorees included bassist/producer/musical director Adam W. Blackstone BM '04 (Instrumental Performance) [Justin Timberlake, Rihanna] and Emmy Award-winning TV and film sound editor Jeffrey Stern BFA '75 (Film) ["Boardwalk Empire," "Goodfellas"], who each received the Silver Star Outstanding Alumni Award. More Praise for Professor's Book
The Blessings by Assistant Professor and Creative Writing Director Elise Juska continues to earn raves: it's on Entertainment Weekly’s latest "Must List" of "The Top 10 Things We Love This Week" and was featured in the May 15 issue of Philadelphia City Paper. The recently released novel has already received high praise from Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and Philadelphia Style magazine, and was also named a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection for Summer 2014. Juska, who received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award at UArts' 136th Commencement, also won the Alice Hoffman Prize for Fiction from Ploughshares for her short story "Transfer Station."
'Philadelphia Inquirer' Features Alum's Watch Company
Analog Watch Co., a senior thesis project turned thriving wooden watch company started by Lorenzo Buffa BS '12 (Industrial Design), is featured in the May 19 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Launched with the help of a Creative Incubator/Wells Fargo Fellowship Grant from the University's Corzo Center for the Creative Economy and an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, Buffa's all-wood timepieces are now available at his new store on East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia as well as at the Museum of Modern Art's Design Store. Work by Photography Professor David Graham BFA '76 (Photography) was featured on Philly.com's "Things to Do Philly" list as part of the "Philadelphia Photographers" exhibit on display at the Fabric Workshop and Museum through July 20. Passport to World Cinema Series: Starred Up
Presented by the School of Film and the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS), the "Passport to World Cinema" monthly film series features the past year's strongest cinema from around the globe. Each of the screenings – shown on 35mm film when possible – will include a notable international film title from the recent film festival circuit and a post-screening talkback led by a local film connoisseur. This month features British film "Starred Up" directed by David Mackenzie and speaker Deron Albright. Screenings are $5 for the general public and free to both University of the Arts ID holders and PFS members. More info >>

Stuart Elster '88: Cinderella Liberty
Junior Projects is pleased to present “Cinderella Liberty,” an exhibition of new paintings by Fine Arts Assistant Professor and alumnus Stuart Elster BFA '88 (Fine Arts). In his latest work, Elster broadens his inquiry into the nature of power structures vis-à-vis “Dazzle Camouflage,” a graphic technique used during the World Wars to alter the visual perception of a ship’s location. Housekeeping: Adriane Little
"Housekeeping" consists of a series of shadow boxes, image and text. For this project, Adriane Little meticulously cut 17 copies of the novel Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson into individual words. The text from the book was then placed in the empty space of the shadow box and in front of the image. More info >>
