School of Music Student Wins Trombone Competition

Nicholas Lombardelli '15 (Instrumental Performance) named first place winner in International Trombone Association's Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition

Congratulations to Trombone major Nicholas Lombardelli ’15 (Instrumental Performance) [pictured center above], who was named the first place winner of the Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition sponsored by the International Trombone Association (ITA). The 2014 ITA Solo & Ensemble Competitions were held June 4-7 in Rochester, N.Y.

The top prize included an Edwards jazz trombone donated by Edwards Trombones, Inc.

Lombardelli, who is a member of the UArts "Z" Big Band, was also selected as lead trombonist for the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra (MACJO), recognized as the premier orchestra for the East Coast's finest college jazz musicians. The MACJO orchestra performed in January and April in Bethesda, Md., under the direction of internationally renowned saxophonist and clinician Chris Vadala.
