Undergrad literary magazine Underground Pool visits theme 'Mythos of the Self'

April 24, 2019

The ninth issue of the UArts undergraduate literary magazine, Underground Pool, features the theme of Mythos of the Self. With contributions from undergraduate students from across the UArts community, the issue includes poetry, fiction, and visual art. Graphic Design sophomores created works inspired by this issue during their five-day Applied Design Lab intensive workshops this spring. Multi-media artists Tiri Kananuruk and Sebastián Morales helped the students create dimensional pieces using the laser cutters and 3-D printers in the University’s brand new Makerspace. The workshop included a morning of training related to using available machines before opening up to allow students to engage in hands-on design work. This collaboration provided an opportunity for UArts Creative Writing students to see their work find physical form, and for the Graphic Designers to experiment with new formats for responding to text.

According to Angela Reichers, Chair of the UArts Graphic Design department, "the original thought was for students to create printed posters, but the entire group moved in a more 3-dimensional direction with their work." Visiting the Makerspace over the course of the project, she was really pleased to see their progress over the week and the direction they took the project.
