Profile

Alexandra Schmidt-Ullrich
Industrial Design Program Director
Assistant Professor
MARCH, University of Pennsylvania
BFA, James Madison University

Alexandra Schmidt-Ullrich's work and passions are fed by her BFA in Fine Arts, where she nurtures interests in photography, printmaking and ceramics, as well as a Master’s of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania that encourages spatial and humanistic solutions. Through ASU Designs, she focuses her efforts on furniture design, interior space saving renovations/solutions, architectural model construction, as well as urban greening and social initiatives. In her work as well as in her teaching, fabrication, craft and precision are vital components to her process.

She is also currently co-curator and co-organizer of Philly Works with Will McHale and Katie Winkler. Philly Works hosts and curates exhibits, organizes thoughtful calls for work, and is building an online database that links creative people in the city in the hopes of creating new collaborative opportunities. The current exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Qualities of Life in Philadelphia, showcases numerous projects that directly address larger issues in our region. We are also excited for the release of a new 2012 Philly Works publication that includes the exhibited projects in addition to thoughtful and provocative essays by contributing writers.

Alexandra currently lives and works in Philadelphia where she is a member of the fulltime faculty in the Industrial Design department at the University of the Arts. She has extensive teaching experience from the University of Pennsylvania, where she taught courses in Architecture, Furniture Design and Visual studies from 2001-2011. She has also taught Architecture studios at Lehigh University and Temple University. Since 2005, she has been visiting faculty at Umbau Inc., where she instructs in a 5-week Design Intensive Travel Abroad program in Vienna, Austria.
