Upright/electric bassist and composer, Ryan Kuhns, received his B.M. in three years from the University of the Arts in 2010 and his M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music in 2012, where he studied privately with world-renowned bassist, Jay Anderson. A regular performer on the New York City/Philadelphia music scene has afforded him the opportunity to perform with many jazz greats such as David Liebman, Greg Osby, Joel Frahm, Joe Locke, John Blake Jr., Tim Warfield, Phil Markowitz, Joe Magnarelli, John Fedchock, Marcus Belgrave, Futureman, John Swana, and Gregg Field. In addition, he is an alumnus of the Norman David Eleventet and the Lars Halle Big Band. Ryan’s interest in other styles of music has given him such wide ranging experiences as performing at Carnegie Hall as principal bassist with the National Festival Orchestra under the baton of Benjamin Zander; recording an avant-garde soundtrack with UArts faculty for a documentary by Brad Glanden; performing with harpist/singer-songwriter Gillian Grassie on NBC’s The 10! Show and multiple times on WXPN; playing in a duo group with fellow bassist Micah Jones; in numerous pit orchestras; and in praise and worship/gospel bands.
As an educator Ryan has recorded many instructional videos with Tony Miceli and Joe Magnarelli for http://trumpet.studymusiconline.com. In addition, Ryan co-taught a jazz improvisation lecture series at the Curtis Institute of Music; taught the basics of jazz in NYC public schools as an ambassador for the Manhattan School of Music; and has taught private lessons and clinics for years.
