As a student at UArts, Cleveland Luckers Jr. BFA ’73 (Film) honed his artistic abilities and set the stage for what would become a long career in TV broadcasting. As one of very few Black cameramen in Philadelphia, he committed himself to mentoring other young Black men who were hired as cameramen at various news stations. The Cleveland Luckers Jr. Memorial Scholarship, generously underwritten by Cleveland’s daughter Dr. Lynette Luckers, will honor his legacy by supporting the next generation of the diverse perspectives of filmmakers, storytellers, and artists committed to creativity and innovation in TV, media, and film.

Cleveland’s professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. He began his career at Channel 48 before being employed as a cameraman by WPVI-TV Channel 6. With Channel 6, Cleveland took great pride in covering some of the most pivotal, historic moments in Philadelphia, of which he was proud, including the Three-Mile Island incident, a presidential inauguration, and Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies training. His lens captured scenes of triumph and tragedy, and joy and sorrow, while documenting important events. His work behind the camera was more than a job—it was a vocation, a way of storytelling that impacted countless lives.
